New Hybrid Police Cruisers Hit the Streets of New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — The New Bedford Police Department has announced that two of its frontline cruisers are now Ford hybrids.

"We are proud to announce that our department has taken a significant step towards a more sustainable and fiscally responsible future," Police Chief Paul Oliveira said.

"With reduced emissions, improved fuel efficiency, and enhanced versatility, these new cruisers are a step in the right direction," he said. "These vehicles will undoubtedly help to save taxpayer money over the next few years."

Oliveira noted the hybrid cruisers can get around 23 miles per gallon when operating on city streets, as opposed to the regular models, which only get about 17. The new addition saves fuel costs and helps lessen the carbon footprint of years of continuous patrolling.

The New Bedford Police Department acknowledges that as of today, two West End patrol units, No. 12 and No. 14, are hybrids.

Oliveira said the future goal is to not only outfit New Bedford's entire fleet with hybrid vehicles but perhaps even electric ones in years to come.
