The manatee that had been spotted off the coast of Cape Cod in recent weeks was captured by an animal rescue team on Thursday.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare took to their Facebook page today to announce the news that the 1,100 lb mammal had been rescued.

They had been monitoring the manatee since sightings of the animal began happening around Cape Cod in late August.

Though the waters around the Cape are still fairly warm, manatees are typically found in warmer waters and with the weather turning here on the Southcoast, the IFAW was concerned for the manatee's safety.

The massive mammal was taken to Mystic Aquarium for observation and rehabilitation and will reportedly be transported back to warmer, open waters around Florida soon.
