Ellie Goulding warns that her new music video for ‘Anything Could Happen’ might be tough to watch because it tells a tragic story. The singer has unveiled the official clip along with a press release in which she explains her artistic vision.
Filmed on the shores of Malibu, the video begins at the end, with shots of Goulding lying on the ground surrounded by mysterious floating orbs and a male companion covered in blood. Flashback scenes show the pair driving down the street together before they are struck in a violent collision with another vehicle. As the clip fades out, Goulding floats away to the heavens, evidently headed to a better place.
The singer explains, “I wanted there to be a surreal aspect but also something very emotional and touching. The idea that so much can change in a single instant scares me and I like confronting my fears. Some people might find the video hard to watch because of how sad it is, but I wanted it to be thought provoking!”
‘Anything Could Happen’ was directed by Floria Sigismondi, whose body of work includes edgy clips like Katy Perry‘s ‘E.T.,’ Christina Aguilera‘s ‘Fighter,’ and Marilyn Manson‘s ‘The Beautiful People.’ Goulding says, “Working with Floria was perfect because she is as crazy as me but is a really, really clever person who turns crazy ideas into beautiful ones.”
‘Anything Could Happen’ is the first single from Goulding’s latest release, ‘Halcyon,’ which arrives at retailers on Oct. 9.
