Animal Control Officer Manny Maciel is asking for the public's help in finding the person who abandoned a dog in New Bedford's south end.   After calls from concerned residents about a dog that had been dropped off from a car, Macial caught the 5-year-old shepherd mix on Willard Street.

Since then, the dog has had surgery to remove a choke chain that had grown into his skin.   Maciel believes the chain had been around the dog's neck for some time.

The dog's owner could face animal cruelty charges.  One would be for abandoning the dog, the other for leaving the chain on instead of getting the dog treated.   Witnesses describe the person who dropped of the dog as a blond woman, driving a Honda.

Anyone with information is asked to call Animal Control at 508-991-6366.
