BOURNE (WBSM) — A new traffic pattern is coming to the Bourne Bridge rotary on the Cape Cod side.

To anyone who has ever tried to enter or exit – whether from the bridge, MacArthur Boulevard, Trowbridge Road or Sandwich Road – it will be a welcome change, although it will take some getting used to first.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced today that crews and contractors will install a new traffic pattern at the rotary beginning the evening of Monday, April 29.

“This new traffic pattern is being installed to improve safety and traffic operations by restriping the rotary with two lanes, adding a channelized right turn lane from Route 28 northbound to Sandwich Road eastbound and adding a right turn lane from Route 28 southbound to Trowbridge Road,” MassDOT said in a release.

Currently, there are no lanes painted on the rotary and that means it’s a bit of a free-for-all when it comes to traveling through the rotary and navigating toward your desired exit.

Sometimes, you’ll have to go around multiple times to find your way out, like the “Big Ben, Parliament” scene in National Lampoon’s European Vacation.

With this new pattern, specific lanes will at least help a bit in guiding motorists in the right direction.

As you can see from these photos, the basic rule of thumb is that the longer you’ll have to travel around the rotary, the further in you will go.

There will also be painted lines to assist motorists with entering and exiting the rotary.
