Every year thousands of people get rid of their pets to make room for kids. The idea that babies and pets don't mix is a common thought, but is it true?

For years my husband and I have wanted a dog, but haven't lived anyplace where that was possible. And now that we are finally in our own home, we've got a baby on the way, so once again a dog is on hold. But should it be?

Every year thousands of people get rid of their dogs and cats when they learn that kids are coming into the picture. These poor pets get left at shelters and many don't ever get adopted. So do the animals need to go because of a baby?

The Humane Society and child care sites alike say no. Pets and babies can co-exist, you just need to prep your pet for baby's arrival.

The Baby Center offers some great tips for this including getting your pet used to a place that can be all their own, like the laundry room or a dog crate. Stock this place with their favorite toys, some food and water and a blanket and allow them to get used to retreating here when baby's crying might become too much.

Another pre-baby plan is too start touching your pet in places a small child might have access to. Baby's explore with their hands, so getting your pet used to hands on their tail, in their ears, under their belly, etc is a good idea. Of course start with gentle touches and work your way up to more hands on grabbing that a little one might tend to do.

The Humane Society also offers very helpful tips like getting friends with infants to bring them by before your baby arrives, allowing your pet to have some baby time. And even playing recordings of babies crying or cranking up an empty baby swing to get your pet used to the new stuff and new noises coming soon.

All in all, babies and pets can live together quite happily and even become the best (and cutest) of friends!
