This will be the last season for American Idol and auditions are taking place across the country.

The Alex and Ani Center in Providence hosted more than 1,000 auditioners on Thursday who hope that they will make it to the final round and become the next, and last, American Idol.

Among the hopefuls were some New Bedford residents trying to achieve superstardom.

Alexandria DeAndrade saw this as a once in a lifetime opportunity and headed down to Providence with some friends.

“I decided since it was the last season we can’t pull that ‘gotta do it next year’ excuse,” said DeAndrade “so I grabbed all my friends since it was only a 40 minute drive away I said ‘we all gotta go do this it’s gonna be fun it’s gonna be an awesome experience and we’ll have such good memories here.’”

DeAndrade’s friend Jeremy Dupont came along and decided to give it a try.

“We just were impressed that it was so close,” said DuPont “so we were like ‘yeah totally, let’s do it, let’s take a chance on it.”

Autumn Cyr saw it as an opportunity to represent New Bedford.

“I feel like it’s a little city but it’s coming back,” says Cyr “it’s definitely coming back with the arts, the music, I just think it’s a great opportunity for this place.”

While more than 1,000 came to audition only a few make it to the next round, but one of them was New Bedford’s own Diana Brooks who says an audition like this is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to give it a try.

“It’s really exciting,” says Brooks “this experience is great I feel like everyone should stand in line for eight hours and do one of these one day.”

Those who wanted to audition but were unable to make it out on Thursday can still submit an audition online until September 30.
