Patnaude’s Aquarium and Pet Supply has decided to close after 70 years of business.

According to Southcoast Today, the pet store was founded 70 years ago in a New Bedford basement.  It has survived its fair share of challenges including a massive fire in 2001 that ripped through the building and killed thousands of their fish and pets.

One challenge that Patnaude's couldn't overcome was the internet.  Normand Patnaude told the Standard Times that he couldn't compete with online pet stores who can deliver pets and pet supplies significantly cheaper.

Patnaudes will likely close sometime this spring.  Everything in the store has been discounted by 20%, but those discounts will get deeper as the store's final days draw closer.
