New Bedford police arrested two men in two separate car thefts just hours apart on the same day, beginning with a resident who found a man sleeping in their yard — only to have him allegedly steal their car.

Fire crews responded to a fire at a downtown New Bedford home on Monday, marking the fifth blaze that the city's fire department has fought since Saturday and the second one today.

A New Bedford man with a long arrest record, according to police, has been arrested after he led officers on a short chase in a stolen car early Tuesday morning.
