Sen. Mark Montigny is pushing for the unspent budget for UMass Dartmouth’s operation of the Star Store in New Bedford to go to students impacted by its closure.
The New Bedford Dry Goods Company opened Star Store at 715 Purchase Street at the corner of Union Street in 1844. As New Bedford grew, so grew the Star Store.
UMass Dartmouth is pulling classes from the historic Star Store in downtown New Bedford, effective immediately, after the state budget eliminated funding.
With a vote to formally endorse the Massachusetts FY23 budget slated for Monday afternoon, state legislators will also be approving an amendment to purchase the Star Store in New Bedford — for just $1.
