A Sobriety Checkpoint will be in effect in Bristol County this weekend.

Massachusetts State Police Superintendent Colonel Richard D. McKeon says the checkpoint will run from Saturday into Sunday.

The checkpoint will operate on a public way during varied hours.

McKeon says the selection of vehicles won't be arbitrary, safety will be assured, and that any inconveniences to motorists will be minimized with advance notice to reduce fear and anxiety.

The stated purpose of the excercise is to "further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public’s awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from our roadways. "

The operation is being funded through a grant provided by the Highway Safety Division of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.
