Police in Newport arrested a man wanted in connection with a Fall River homicide that occurred during the first two hours of the new year.

The Bristol County District Attorney's office says 24-year-old Jeffrey Souza of Mott Street in Fall River was taken into custody in Newport around noon on Thursday. He's charged in Massachusetts with carrying a loaded, illegal firearm.

The arrest came less than 12 hours into a homicide investigation by Fall River and Massachusetts State Police. At 1:17 a.m. New Year's Day, police responded to the corner of Albert and Huard Streets in Fall River. 28-year-old Kyle Brady of Fall River was shot and later died.

Souza will appear in Newport District Court Friday morning to face the firearms charge.
