When the Friends of Jack Foundation hosts its annual gala this Saturday night at the Arch at the Meadow in Rochester, it will mark its eighth consecutive sellout. That’s eight years of planning, ticket sales and auction item collecting.

“We actually have a wait list for the event,” Friends of Jack President and Founder Jill Fearons said about the emotional night.

Why the Gala Draws a Crowd

Fearons believes the popularity of the event comes down to one core value.

“The donors now understand the importance of pediatrics in the community, and we are truly the only nonprofit in the area strictly focused on pediatrics. I think they see the value in that,” Fearons said. "It can really hit home because so many of the guests have children of their own."

A First-Class Black Tie Evening

The black tie gala is first class from start to finish. Guests are greeted with valet parking, three open bars, eight food stations and a silent auction. While the gala is always a fun evening, the real purpose is to raise money to ensure SouthCoast children receive the best healthcare possible.

The good news is that it’s working.

Making a Lasting Difference for Kids

“Over the past eight years, the Friends of Jack has raised $3.5 million. All of that money, with the exception of a $50,000 state grant, was donor-delivered," Fearons said. "The funds have primarily gone to cover expenses and benefits for three child life specialists at St. Luke’s Hospital. They act as a liaison between the children and the doctors and nurses."

"The money also supports the Friends of Jack Superhero and Hero Bear programs," she said. "We love partnering with other nonprofits in the area to support them."

The Friends of Jack also recently purchased a nitrous oxide machine for St. Luke’s Hospital. This allows children to receive a small dose of laughing gas to ease procedures as simple as getting stitches.

“We like to invest in things that can make a real difference in kids’ overall care," Fearons said.
