The not guilty verdict of George Zimmerman has half the country in a rage, so much so, that people are uttering the words "ashamed to be an American" including singer Toni Braxton and "The Wire" creator David Simon. Here is an excerpt from his recent blog.

If I were a person of color in Florida, I would pick up a brick and start walking toward that courthouse in Sanford. Those that do not, those that hold the pain and betrayal inside and somehow manage to resist violence — these citizens are testament to a stoic tolerance that is more than the rest of us deserve. I confess, their patience and patriotism is well beyond my own.

Toni Braxton tweeted,” Today I am embarrassed to be an American…my heart goes out to the Martin family.”

Are these comments overboard? Or do you think they represent what most are thinking?

To me, being ashamed of being an American seems over the top.
