A large number of people may have been exposed to rabies in Tiverton. State officials say a calf in a pasture next to Gray's Ice Cream bit a resident on July 15th.

The calf was quarantined and died a few days later, but the state didn't learn of the calf's death until days later. By that point, the remains of the animal were decomposed to the point that it was impossible to determine if the calf carried rabies.

Residents who came in contact with the calf between July 5th and 21st are urged to contact their state's health department for an evaluation.
