Downtown New Bedford will soon be home to a new 10 million dollar boutique hotel.

Renovations will start at 218-226 Union Street on a 68-room hotel later this year. Mayor John Mitchell says he’s excited about the economic growth the city will experience once the hotel goes up.

The new hotel will have a total of 68 rooms, a spacious lobby, 3,300-square-foot restaurant and a 5,100-square-foot banquet space.  This building was once home to WFHN-FM Fun 107 and New Bedford's WBSM 1420.

Personally, I am very excited to see something new like this coming to downtown New Bedford. My only suggestion would be that the developers seriously consider adding a cozy coffee shop, perhaps a Starbucks, to their hotel lobby plans. I think this will attract people to their hotel which will spread even more word of mouth in our community. Did I just say Starbucks? Yes, I did J

According to the Mayor's office, the hotel project by Columbus Group, which is a Boston-based private investment firm, hopes to be completed by 2018.
