Westport school committee is requesting $316,000 for some unexpected expenses this school year.

Superintendent Ann Marie Dargon said the booster group does great work but cannot raise enough to cover a lot of expenses. Dargon gave some insight on what the find are for, saying that some of the funds would be used to appoint a part-time curriculum director and some will go towards unexpected special education costs.

Selectmen Chairman Craig Dutra warned against the selectmen violating its fiscal principle of not using newly certified free cash within a fiscal year. But Selectman Antone Vieira Jr. indicated he is convinced the district has encountered an unanticipated situation saying "The challenges are there and there is no way the school could anticipate it at this point".

Selectmen Vice Chairman R. Michael Sullivan first recommended the committee come back in two weeks with a thorough report on what the expenses will be used  for but the request was placed on a Town Meeting warrant.
