It's a bold move, but an ecomonic one for the town of Westport. What was once two serperate positions are now become one. The position of the Harbormaster and the Shellfish Constable are merging as The Director of Marine Services.

The position's salary has been set and slated to $75,000 per year and not a penny more. The move was made following the retirement of Harbormaster Richard "Richie" Earle and Shellfish Constable Gary Sherman.

Despite the concern for comparing responsibilities and duties to the budget given, this change will be beneficial to Westport in comparison to town's size.

According to Westport.Wickedlocal, acting harbormaster Christopher Leonard has assisted Earle for years and with the help of local Gary Tripp, together they have already seen a difference with the change for the better. More areas are being looked over (especially the East Branch) and the movement to combine positions has only produced a positive outcome.

The town also feels that applicants for this position should be recommended from the Police Department since carrying of a gun is mandatory. Updates on the permanent position will follow.
