It's part of the Massachusetts Safe Routes to school program, and more than 300 elementary and middle schools will be taking part.

Parents, teachers and community leaders at participating New Bedford schools will walk and bike to and from school on Wednesday.  The program is all about creating awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling, along with increasing physical activity among kids.

Mayor Jon Mitchell will take in part of the event at the Elizabeth Carter Brooks Elementary at 7:45 a.m.  Other schools celebrating Walk and Bike to school day are  Parker Elementary, Winslow Elementary, Pulaski Elementary, Gomes Elementary, Kempton Elementary, Roosevelt Middle School and Pacheco Elementary.
