WAREHAM - Wareham's Chief of Police has suddenly retired.

Town Administrator Derek Sullivan announced Tuesday that Chief Kevin Walsh has retired after reaching his maximum retirement benefits.

Walsh has been on leave for unknown reasons since late March. He was appointed Chief in January of 2015, and has served on the Wareham Police Department since the 1980s.

In Walsh's absence, Lt. John Walcek will be named the Acting Chief of Police for the Town of Wareham. The official appointment will be made at the Board of Selectmen's meeting on May 15.

In a statement to WBSM News, Walcek says "I have always been very proud and honored to serve as a Wareham Police Officer. We have a great department of dedicated officers who work very hard. We will continue to serve and protect our community to the best of our ability."
