The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has joined numerous communities across the nation by installing a drug disposal kiosk on campus.

The kiosk will be located in the lobby of the Department of Public Safety, according to an email to the campus community from Public Safety Director Col. Emil Fioravanti.

Police departments are installing these pieces of equipment in order to reduce the amount of prescription medication circulating communities and contributing to the increase in opioid addiction, including the Dartmouth Police Department.

"This kiosk makes it possible for any member of our community to safely dispose of unwanted prescription drugs, over the counter medications, vitamins, and even medications intended for pets," Fioravanti said. "The goal is to remove drugs from improper circulation and keep these substances away from children and out of the water supply."

To dispose of any drugs, simply walk into the lobby and drop the substance into the secured kiosk. No questions asked.

The initiative is part of a partnership between the university and the Town of Dartmouth.

Three overdoses have been reported on campus this school year, two resulting in the death of a student.
