NEW BEDFORD - Two women have been arrested after setting off a fire alarm and fleeing from a rehabilitation facility in New Bedford.

New Bedford Police responded to the Women's Addiction Treatment Center at 108 North Front Street at 1:27 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a fire alarm that had been activated at the facility.

Upon arrival, police learned that two women had fled from the center toward Acushnet Avenue. The women climbed a fence and ran onto Route 18, forcing several vehicles to swerve or stop to avoid hitting them. The women were stopped by members of the New Bedford Fire Department and held until police arrived.

New Bedford Police arrested the women, Hailey Gregoire, 26, of Braintree, and Sarah Cary, 28, of Bridgewater. Gregoire is charged with setting off a false fire alarm and disturbing the peace. Cary is also charged with disturbing the peace.

The arrests were made at 2 p.m.
