Tri-town students (and parents) enjoyed a district wide No Homework Night on Thursday.

In Marion, Mattapoisett and Rochester, the Superintendent of Schools declared yesterday a "no-homework" day.  I've never heard of this in any other city or town, but I LOVED it.

Nightly homework seems so much more demanding for today's kids than it was when I was growing up.  Honestly, the homework can sometimes be exhausting for the parents.  I often feel like I have homework.  Between work, school, sports, dinner, dishes and bath...family time is extremely limited.  It's sometimes challenging to fit in homework every night.  With such limited time, I'd prefer more family time than homework struggle time.

Granted, high school students probably can't take many nights off, but would it kill elementary school kids to have an occasional night off from homework?

Jackie from New Bedford called into the show and shared a plan implemented by her son's teacher at the Campbell School.  Jackie says her son gets a packet of work every Monday and it needs to be turned in every Friday.  This allows families to work at their own pace, and teaches time management.  If families know they have a super busy Thursday night...they can work ahead.

However, another teacher called in to talk about some challenges that strategy creates.  She said that the kids won't know all of the math concepts that will be taught later in the week...making it impossible for kids to work ahead.
