NEW BEDFORD — A third-generation New Bedford educator with over 30 years of experience in the system has been named Deputy Superintendent of New Bedford Public Schools.

Karen Ann Treadup, principal of Carney Academy for the past eight years, was named to the Deputy Superintendent position today.

A New Bedford native and lifelong city resident, Treadup has served New Bedford Public Schools for 31 years, beginning as a Special Education teacher in 1987. She holds a Masters of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Bridgewater State University.

A third-generation New Bedford educator, Treadup’s career follows in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother, both of whom were city schoolteachers before her.

Treadup will join new superintendent thomas anderson, who is also beginning on july 1st.

In accepting the position, Karen Treadup said, "It has been a privilege and honor to have served the students and families of the NBPS since 1987. I look forward to working with Superintendent Anderson as I continue this service to the students, families and the New Bedford community in my role as Deputy Superintendent."
