NEW BEDFORD - Three people are hospitalized after police say a man operating under the influence of drugs crashed into an oncoming vehicle in New Bedford.

Police responded to a motor vehicle accident in the 3200 block of Acushnet Avenue Sunday around 9:30 p.m. Preliminary investigation revealed that a pickup truck driven by 52-year-old Robert Swain of New Bedford crossed the double yellow lines, striking a Nissan Sentra with two 18-year-old people inside. The male and female teenage victims suffered minor injuries and were transported to St. Luke's Hospital.

Medics were prepared to administer Narcan to Swain, but because he was nodding in and out of consciousness they decided to instead transport him to St. Luke's for further treatment.

Swain was arrested at the hospital and is charged with operating under the influence of drugs, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and failure to stay right of center lane.
