So I am literally days away from having my first child (if due dates mean anything!) and I can't help but wonder...how will I know it's happening?

I'm fairly certain I'll know a contraction when I feel one, but never having had one before I can't help but wonder.

Sure the birthing classes and baby books tell you about the other pre-labor signs, the baby dropping (check), loss of your mucous plug (gross, but check) the impulsive need to clean (nesting, check)...but nothing is really that clear cut.

As my doctor keeps reminding me, she'll come when she's ready. But can I know when she's ready?

I guess what I'm asking from those that have already been through it, was there a moment you knew labor was coming? A distinct "thing" that let you know the process had really begun?

They say only 15% of women actually have their water break, so that isn't a for sure factor...so what is? Is anything?

Every pregnancy is different, but maybe if I can get enough different stories one of those experiences will be similar to mine.

So was there a moment just before labor that gave you the heads up it was happening? Is there anything I should try to be conscious of so I don't as Michael Rock put it "have this baby on the conference room table."

This nervous first-time mom would be super appreciative of any feedback the seasoned veterans of mom-hood might be able to pass along!
