The Red Sox were long in the running for Giants postseason hero Pablo Sandoval to be an added left-handed bat in the lineup and also to be the starting 3B.

According to CBS Sports’s Jon Heyman, a deal has been struck. The contract that is reportedly being agreed to is for five years and close to $100million.

Sandoval has been a postseason legend for the San Francisco Giants batting .344 in the postseason (10 series). His regular season batting average comes up to .294, but in the last two years he’s batted below .280.

Sandoval’s a two-time all-star voted in for 2011 and 2012. He most recently got beat out again for a gold-glove, an award for the best fielder at his postion.

Before NFL action began on Sunday, it was reported that former Red Sox prospect and Dodgers IF Hanley Ramirez had agreed to a five year/$90million.

It’s uncertain where Ramirez will play, but speculation exists where Ramirez would be willing to make a move to LF. Either case he might be the man they’ve been looking for at the top of the order presence they lost with Jacoby Ellsbury leaving for the Yankees.

Next on the Red Sox radar is starting pitching, particularly with former Red Sox ace Jon Lester was traded to the Athletics for Yoenis Cespedes during the trade deadline.

Lester will cost more than Ramirez or Sandoval. But the Red Sox have made it clear that they aren’t going to lose out, spending a lot of money this offseason to bounce back from a disappointing campaign in 2014.

Don’t count out trades for Phillies ace Cole Hamels, White Sox P Chris Sale, and Reds hurler Johnny Cuerto either in all of this.
