I have decided to run the Falmouth Road Race in memory of my cousin Matthew Houlihan. He was a sophomore at Hamilton college when he passed in his sleep from an arrhythmia on October 3, 2000. This was just one month shy of his 20th birthday. My family was devastated after the loss of a wonderful teen who seemed to be in perfect health prior to his death. However, his parents, Elizabeth and William “Binny” Houlihan, have fought to make something special come out of their grief.

They put a scholarship in his name, the Matthew W. Houlihan Foundation Inc. Every year, Team Houli raises the money to send a Tabor Academy student in need to the college of their dreams. "Since it's inception in 2001, the foundation has awarded more than $300,000.00 in annual scholarships to students at Tabor Academy in Marion, Massachusetts and Hamilton College in Clinton, New York."

My cousin is described as the "vivacious and generous spirit of a young man who viewed the world through loving eyes and a kind soul.” I don’t remember much about him because I was only 8 when he passed, but I do remember how he loved life and saw the beauty in this world at every corner. He was a talented painter, an impressive athlete, and an exceptional student. More than that, he was an amazing friend. A testament to that fact is the continued support of his friends since his passing. Every August, they join the Houlihan effort to make his legacy something unforgettable.

And now it’s my turn to run the race for Houli. I have pledged to raise at least $1,000. I hope you can support me in this endeavor. No amount is too small. Thank you so much for your time,
Kasey Silvia
