A Taunton man in his 60s was killed early Thursday morning in a fire at his Tremont Street home.

Police say a cab driver drove by the house at about 3:40 a.m. and called 911. Upon arrival, firefighters battled heavy flames in the back of the house.

“Temperatures did affect the guys who have to work the scene, so it does take a toll on your body and the guys did a nice job combating some difficult conditions,” said Taunton Fire Chief Tim Bradshaw. “They had difficulty gaining access to barred windows. Report of victim on second floor — he succumbed to his injuries.”

Crews said the man appeared to be trying to escape because his body was found laying by the front door of the home.

“The victim was a male, mid-sixties, [who] succumbed from his injuries,” said Chief Bradshaw.
