FALL RIVER - A New Bedford man charged with a double homicide in the city has been ordered held without bail following his arraignment in Fall River Superior Court.

The Bristol County District Attorney's Office says Carmelo Kercado, 35, was ordered held without bail on charges on two counts of murder and $50,000 on charges of trafficking cocaine and conspiracy to violate drug laws. The charges, brought against Kercado in a Bristol County Grand Jury indictment, also include unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a loaded firearm.

Prosecutors say Kercado was the passenger in the backseat of a vehicle on Central Avenue when he fatally shot the two men in the front, Stephen Bodden, 27, and Fabio Tavares, 28, on October 10.

Kercado was captured in North Carolina two months later on December 19.

Kercado is due back in court on July 24 for a pre-trial conference.
