An alert New Bedford Public School student was quick to phone police this morning while waiting for the school bus.

According to Superintendent Pia Durkin's spokesperson, Jonathan Carvalho, police responded to the bus stop in the area of Sawyer and Reynolds Streets after the student reported an adult showing a knife at the stop. All students at the stop were able to board the bus safely.

Several schools across the North End enacted heightened security measures as a precaution.

Out of an abundance of caution, the bus stop in question has been moved from that location.

The incident remains under investigation.
