The National Weather Service expects snow and high winds in much of Rhode Island and Eastern Massachusetts today, including along the South Coast.

According to a Special Weather Statement issued Sunday morning, light to moderate snow will accumulate up to one to two inches in Southeast Massachusetts including in Taunton, Plymouth, Fall River, New Bedford and Mattapoisett.

Because this is the first snow of the season, drivers are urged to take extra precautions and allow extra time to reach their destinations. Pedestrians are also encouraged to use caution.

A Wind Advisory is also in place until 6 p.m. for Rhode Island and much of Eastern Massachusetts, including the communities of Taunton, Fall River, New Bedford, Providence, Warwick, Bristol and Newport, among others.

Strong winds will blow at about 20 to 30 mph, with gusts blowing up to 50 mph. This may impact power lines as tree limbs are downed by these winds. Fully or partially leaved trees will be most susceptible to this type of damage.

Scattered power outages may occur as a result of these winds and driving may also be difficult, particularly for high profile vehicles.
