This is not the first time this topic has come up.  Do we start school too early for our kids?

According to the Standard Times, Dartmouth High School is once again exploring the question. The question is valid. Anyone who has lived with a teenager (or has ever been one) can tell you that very few of them have their "A Game" in full effect in the early morning. For some reason, however, that is exactly when we ask them to start school. The alarms set on their iPhones are set for before dawn. The snoozing struggle is real.

I know what you're thinking...because I feel the same way. We woke up pre-dawn just like today's high school kids. We survived. So what's the problem? My heart is with you. It really is. But according to Shannon Jenkins, the Vice Chair of the Committee that is exploring this option...the kids are "fighting biology" because their melatonin levels peak at 11pm.

Here's another issue. High school sports. It's all fine and good if every high school in the conference agrees to start their school days (and, subsequently, their athletics) later. The problem, however, lies when and if Dartmouth independently makes the decision. How could after school away games begin while Dartmouth High School classes are still in session? Jenkins offered up that she'd rather impose difficulties on sports, than on academics. Honestly, I'm not a fan of changing school start times, but it is hard to argue with any of this.

Mashpee will start later next fall. Barnstable, Falmouth and Plymouth are also considering starting school later.
