Robbery Suspect Arrested in Wareham

WAREHAM — Quick action by Wareham Police and a civilian Tuesday morning resulted in the arrest of a robbery suspect.

A communications officer received a 9-1-1 call around 8:30 am from the Dollar General store at 3137 Cranberry Highway that a robbery had taken place and the suspect was armed with a handgun.

Officer Stephen Joy quickly responded and spotted a man matching the suspect's description crossing the roadway. The officer ordered the man at gunpoint to drop to the ground.

When Officer Joy moved in, the suspect reacted violently, beginning to struggle with the officer. A civilian saw the altercation and grabbed the suspect's legs, allowing Joy to handcuff the individual. A weapon, which turned out to be a pellet gun, was found in the suspect's back pocket. A bag of money was also recovered.

Forty-six-year-old James Demers of East Wareham was arrested and charged with armed robbery and resisting arrest.

Wareham Police are also investigating two other robberies.

The first happened Monday evening at a Cumberland Farms store on Depot Street.  A man handed the clerk a note demanding cash and saying he had a gun. He fled the store on foot in an unknown direction.

About three hours later, a second robbery happened at the Dollar General Store on Cranberry Highway. Police say a man matching the description in the robbery earlier, demanded cash and said he had a gun. He reached over the counter and grabbed money from the register, then fled the store in an unknown direction.

Both robberies remain under investigation.
