NEW BEDFORD — There are reports of a person shot in the area of the Nashmont housing complex in New Bedford's North End.

The report came across the scanner sometime after 1 p.m. of a male party brought to St. Luke's Hospital via private vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound. Subsequent scanner reports indicated the incident happened on Newcomb Street at the Nashmont complex.

Scanner reports also indicated that police were searching for a silver BMW that may be riding around with a shotgun in the vehicle.

WBSM News was on the scene shortly after the scanner reports, and viewed police interviewing what are believed to be witnesses to the shooting. Officers on scene could not provide any information.

Witnesses at the scene provided conflicting reports to WBSM News. Multiple people stated the suspect or suspects were driving in a vehicle from which the gun was fired. Another disputed this, and said the shooter had exited the vehicle.

New Bedford Police spokesman Lt. Amos Melo declined to comment on the reports, telling WBSM News that no information is being released at this time.

The shooting comes just hours after the city experienced its sixth homicide of 2017, after a man was found stabbed to death in the area of North Front and Tallman Streets early Wednesday morning.
