A campus-wide email, entitled "Terrible loss for our community," was sent out just before 3 a.m., this morning, notifying UMass Dartmouth students of the sudden death of a male student.

According to the email, the student was found dead in his Birch Hall room Friday night at 11p.m.

The death was later said to be from an accidental overdose.

In a follow up email from university officials they informed the student community that they had been in contact with that student’s family and friends and offered counselling services for those who need it.

The Counseling Center, which is located on the second floor of the Auditorium Annex, will be open from 8 a.m. until  5 p.m. on weekdays and students can make appointments by calling 508-999-8648 or X8650.

Acting Chancellor Gary Kavanaugh also thanked those from student affairs, housing and public safety who responded to the incident and wrote,

The professionalism and compassion that I witnessed last night as they grappled with this tragedy demonstrated that our students are well cared for during the most difficult circumstances."
