NEW BEDFORD - New Bedford voters will decide this year whether to lengthen the mayoral term.

Earlier this year, the citizens group, "New Bedford Fourward," began collecting signatures to get a ballot question asking city residents to lengthen the mayoral term from two years to four years approved.

Leslie Lawrence, a volunteer with "New Bedford Fourward," tells WBSM News State Secretary William Galvin's office has certified 2,971 signatures collected for the ballot initiative. Lawrence says the group needed a total of 2,880 signatures to put the question on the ballot.

The mayoral term question will appear on the November municipal ballot. If approved, the four year mayoral term would be effective for the 2019 election.
