Area police dispatchers began getting some calls shortly after 7 Tuesday night from people asking why their homes were shaking.

Some thought there had been an explosion nearby.   The calls came from New Bedford, Fairhaven, Acushnet, Westport and Wareham.  The National Weather Service in Taunton was also took many calls.   I did not feel this one, but having been in one that hit the Adirondacks region of New York State, feeling an earthquake is a scary thing.  Not being considered a high risk quake area, when the walls start shaking and you hear a rumbling sound, there are some very tense moments.   A few seconds feel like minutes.   But for us here on the Southcoast, it could be a very long time before we feel the shaking of the earth again.
