NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) _ A 16-year-old Rhode Island boy has apparently drowned while on a family outing at a Massachusetts pond.

Authorities say the teen's body was recovered from Whiting's Pond in North Attleborough just after 6 p.m. Sunday. His name was not made public but Fire Chief Michael Brousseau says he was visiting from nearby Providence, Rhode Island.

Rescue crews including dive teams responded to the pond at about 4:30 p.m. when the victim's family lost sight of him in the water. The body was recovered about 30 feet from the beach about 90 minutes later. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Brousseau says the search was made difficult by the pond's silty waters.

The boy's death was at least the ninth apparent drowning the state since late June.
