Eversource reports that a little after 2 p.m., a piece of equipment near their Church Street substation in the far north end failed, causing a power outage for about 3,500 customers.

Eversource restored power to 2,500 of those customers within four minutes, using automated switching equipment on their system to reroute power around the damaged equipment. They say they're currently working to restore power to the remaining 1,000 or so customers, and expect to have that work complete within about 30 minutes.

Michael Durand, spokesman for Eversource, says he's unsure at this time what damaged the equipment leading to the outage, but believes it could have been a squirrel.
