NEW BEDFORD — One man is dead following a shooting early Friday morning in New Bedford.

The Bristol County District Attorney's Office says New Bedford Police were called to 20 Bentley Street, just north of Coggeshall Street, for a report of multiple shots fired at around 1:12 a.m. on Friday.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a man lying on the street outside of a Yellow Cab. The man was suffering from several gunshot wounds. He was transported to St. Luke's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The man has been identified as Christopher Dunton, 24.

No charges have been announced in the shooting death.

Reached by WBSM News Friday morning, a manager at Yellow Cab said he was still waiting to speak with detectives about the incident, and could not provide details on the cab driver's condition or his involvement, if any, in the shooting death.

The investigation is active and ongoing by New Bedford Police and Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.
