New Bedford Police continue to crack down on people illegally operating ATV's and other recreational vehicles on city streets.

Police arrested 19-year-old Calixto Smith of New Bedford after he was seen driving an ATV at a high rate of speed without a helmet on Ashley Boulevard near Dean Street early Sunday morning. Smith tried fleeing police, but his ATV stalled after a few blocks. Smith faces multiple charges, including operating with a suspended license, failure to stop for police, and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.

Later that day, an off-road dirt bike was involved in an accident at County and Division Streets. 18-year-old Gelfy Vega of New Bedford rear-ended a vehicle and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he is listed in the ICU. Vega was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, and he will be charged upon his release from the hospital.
