According to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, the Port of New Bedford has the highest valued fish catch in the nation for the 17th year in a row.

According to NOAA's annual Seafood report, fishermen landed $327 million worth of fish in New Bedford last year, and 77% of that catch was sea scallops.

The report also states commercial fishing continues to be a strong contributor to the U.S. economy with fishermen landing 9.6 billion pounds of seafood around the country, valued at more than $5 billion.

The report also suggests Americans should eat more fish.  According to NOAA, the average American ate just under 15 pounds of fish and shellfish in 2016. U.S. dietary guidelines recommend 26 to 39 pounds of seafood per person, per year.
