The contract between 40,000 union workers and Stop & Shop Supermarkets has been extended through next Sunday, March 3rd.

Contract talks are scheduled to continue until Sunday so that a new contract can be hammered out, according the The Boston Herald. Last month, the supermarket chain set up hiring centers to recruit temporary replacement workers in case of a lockout or strike.

In addition to stores in Connecticut, Rhode Island and other parts of Massachusetts, Stop & Shop has stores in New Bedford, North Dartmoth, Fairhaven, Fall River and in East Wareham.
