Our office kitchen has undergone a complete renovation. Over the past month, we have gone from a vintage 1992 kitchenette to a granite counter top and contemporary cabinetry from Couto Construction. Our stainless steel refrigerator arrived this week, but there are some very strict rules, including the one about no food in the refrigerator.

If you notice in the picture above, our Whirlpool refrigerator is quite nice. There's lots of storage space, with a built-in ice maker. The stainless steel is fingerprint resistant, which is nice. But if you look closely at the picture above, you'll notice one thing missing. There is no food in the refrigerator.

Here's the problem: we have a very bad history with refrigerators. Multiple times in the past few years, our mini refrigerators have gotten so bad that we've had to throw the whole thing away. Just last year, we had to toss one because of a "mystery sauce" that was stuck to the bottom of it. It was a combination of juices, sauces and a tangy smell.

Unfortunately, we cannot be trusted with nice things, and we are afraid of what will happen when we put food in our fridge, which is the reason why there is no food allowed in our refrigerator right now. When the times comes when we can put food in the fridge, there will be extremely strict rules regarding what goes in the fridge and how long it stays in there.

This is the actual memo from our General Manager.

"As we near completion on this addition to the office, I want to address how I see the fridge being used.  I am going to stock the fridge with water, soda, snacks (please respond with suggestions) on a regular basis. The fridge and kitchen area was built so that all employees (and guests and advertisers of the stations) have access to drinks and snacks throughout the day.  The purpose of the fridge is not for leftovers or to store food you personally bring in. If you need access to a smaller fridge to store your lunch or other food, please let me know and we will get you one for your area.  If food is brought into the station and you want to take some of the leftovers home, I am going to purchase “To Go” containers that can be used and that can be stored in the fridge until the end of the day. If you do not take that food home at the end of the day, it will be thrown out the next day.  Again, any leftover food that is left in the kitchen area after 5:30pm will be thrown out at the end of the day. It is not to be stored in the fridge overnight.  Let’s be the office that has the clean fridge that every office hopes for. Any questions or suggestions for what else is needed in the new area, let me know."
