NEW BEDFORD - Thirteen people have been arrested within 24 hours in New Bedford's north end.

New Bedford Police say uniformed officers assigned to Station 3 implemented stepped up patrols, leading to the arrests early Wednesday into Thursday.

Most of those who were arrested have addresses in New Bedford, with one man with a listed address in Kissimmee, Florida. Charges range from possession of an open container of alcohol, to driving with a suspended license, and assault on a police officer. The ages of those arrested range from 19 to 68.

Captain Amos Melo, commander at the north end station, says the stepped up patrols are "part of a continuous effort to improve the quality of life for our residents and business owners who live in the north end."

Arrested were:

Jesus M. Nunez, 31, of 90 Pawnee Court, New Bedford, was arrested on a warrant Thursday at 3:53 a.m. Wednesday.

Curteshia M. Wilson, 36, of 276 Cottage St. Apt. 207, New Bedford, was arrested on charges of possession of an open container of alcohol, carrying a weapon and assault on a police officer.

Peter J. Chongarlides Sr., 60, of 66 Penniman St., New Bedford, was charged with possession of an open container of alcohol.

Wilson and Chongarlides were observed drinking alcohol at a park at Phillips Avenue and Acushnet Avenue. Wilson was also found in possession of a three-inch knife and spit at the officer during the booking process.

Rolando Arroyo, 47, of 8 Malden St., New Bedford, and  Jose Carrasquillo, 68, of 5135 Violen Lane, Kissimmee, Fla. were charged with possession of an open container of alcohol. Both were observed drinking alcohol at the intersection of Acushnet Avenue and Collette Street.

Richard Lee Hernandez, 35, of 219 North St. Apt. 1, New Bedford, was arrested on a warrant.

Sade Todman, 19, of 158 Bates St., New Bedford, was arrested on charges of destruction of property over $250 and disorderly conduct. She was charged with damaging a door and frame as she tried to gain entry into a residence and causing a disturbance.

Desiree M. Defreitas, 46, of 113H Hathaway St., New Bedford, was arrested on a warrant.

Robert Andrew Dasilva, 19, of 8 Allen St., New Bedford, was charged with furnishing a false name, disturbing the peace and on a warrant. He was observed screaming at someone in the area of Ashley Boulevard and Beetle Street at about 10 p.m. and gave police a false name when asked his identity.

Dakarai Barboza, 26, of 113 Mashpee Court, New Bedford, was charged with marked lanes violation, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and possession of a counterfeit note. He was stopped by police driving south on the northbound lane of Ashley Boulevard and Deane Street. He was also found with a counterfeit $20 bill.

Brent Lagoa, 23, 98 Clark St. Apt. 3, New Bedford, was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and defective equipment. He was observed driving with a defective headlight on Coffin Avenue and was found to be driving with a suspended license.

Two other individuals were placed in protective custody during the 24-hour period because their behavior endangered themselves and others.
