New Bedford schools will undergo a three-year redistricting plan for middle school students beginning next fall, Superintendent Dr. Pia Durkin told WBSM News.

Durkin said 50 students finishing at the Carl Pacheco School at the end of this school year will go to Keith Middle School instead of Normandin Middle School next fall, as the school system is looking to equalize the population across the city's three middle schools.

"But we need to do it gradually, and without disruption," Durkin said.

Currently, Normandin has 1,150 students. Keith has 900 students, while Roosevelt Middle School has an enrollment of 800.

Durkin said students with siblings at Normandin will still be allowed to go there next fall, so as not to split families between schools.
