NEW BEDFORD - A New Bedford man faces nine charges of assault with a dangerous weapon after an extreme case of apparent road rage.

New Bedford Police responded to the area of Shawmut Avenue and Hathaway Road at around 10 p.m. Sunday for a report of the occupants of two vehicles engaged in a verbal argument.

According to police, one of the vehicles began following the other. The driver of one of the cars, Derek Brent Caron, 32, of 30 Nemasket Place, Apt. A, New Bedford, exited his car and swung a metal bat at the second vehicle, threw the bat at the car, causing front fender damage, and then reached back with the bat as if he were going to strike again.

Police arrested Caron and charged him with nine counts of assault with a dangerous weapon since there were three occupants of the vehicle and to reflect how many times Caron allegedly swung or attempted to swing the bat. Caron is also charged with malicious damage to a motor vehicle.

No injuries were reported.
