A New Bedford man told police last night that he saw two men who matched the description to the two fugitives that escaped from a New York prison five days ago.

A thorough search was conducted after New Bedford Police received a call from someone that believed to have spotted the two escapees.

Police searched an area off Nash Road in the North End of New Bedford, securing an area for several hours along the train tracks. A State Police helicopter flew above the area while K9’s tried to sniff out the suspects on the ground.  The land and air search continued until 11 o'clock last night.

According to NBC 10, authorities stated that there was no "concrete evidence" that the two convicted killers, Richard Matt and David Sweat, were in New Bedford.

New Bedford police said New York authorities had no info that the escapees would be in the New Bedford area, but they checked it out just to be safe.
