NEW BEDFORD - A man who tried kicking a police officer as he was being arrested last week is arrested again, and landed a few punches in the process.

New Bedford Police responded to a report of a shoplifter at the 7-Eleven at 1499 Acushnet Avenue at 2:30 a.m. Monday. The clerk provided a detailed description of the suspect, telling police the man stole soda and food.

Police soon located a man matching the given description. The suspect fled on foot but was soon found hiding in the bed of a nearby pickup truck.

As officers tried to arrest the man, he became combative and punched one of the officers several times in the chest. The suspect, 20-year-old Luis Samuel Ortiz of New Bedford, was ultimately arrested.

During the booking process, Ortiz slapped the police department's camera out of the hand of one of the booking sergeants, causing the camera to fall on the floor and break.

Ortiz is charged with shoplifting, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and malicious destruction of property over $250.

Officers were not injured during the arrest and subsequent booking incident.
